Richard Neal Sturkie (Rick), 76, of Hempstead, Texas, was joyfully welcomed into his eternal home on Sunday, November 17, 2024. Born on February 15, 1948, in Bryan, Texas, Rick was the cherished son of Mozelle Pinson and Dr. Howard Sturkie. After his mother passed away in 1957, his father married Norma Angell and new sisters and brothers were welcomed into the family.

Rick grew up in Palestine, Texas, where he attended Palestine High School and proudly played on the 1964 Texas State Championship football team – a source of lasting pride throughout his life.

A true patriot, Rick served his country with honor, completing three tours of duty as a combat medic during the Vietnam War. His courage, dedication, and compassion left an indelible mark on those he served alongside and earned him three Bronze Stars, as well as other medals.

After returning home, Rick's life took a joyful turn when he met Janice Gauerke, the love of his life. The couple married and built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Rick pursued higher education, graduating with honors from the University of Houston – a testament to his determination and passion for learning.

In 1994, Rick and Janice found their slice of heaven in Waller County, where they raised cattle and enjoyed the company of their beloved horses, "Indiana" and Scooter. Center Hill farm became a sanctuary of hard work and many fun family gatherings, retreats and celebrations.

Rick's legacy is one of love, service and a deep connection to the land and people he held dear.  He served many, many years as an environmental consultant to David Weekley Homes, a relationship of mutual admiration and respect.

Rick will be remembered for his unwavering strength, generous heart, and the joy he brought to those around him.

Rick is survived by his wife Janice Sturkie, his siblings Kay Turner of Kilgore, Dr. Gary Angell of Bryan, Steve Angell of Houston, and Tammy Thompson of Whitesboro. He was deeply loved by his sister Linda Bolton, of blessed memory.

He will also be missed by numerous sister and brother-in-laws, including the Gauerke Girls, Barbara of blessed memory, Debi and Beth who were a very big part of Rick's life. So many nieces and nephews will miss "Uncle Sturkie" and his riveting stories about life, love and adventure.

The family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Rick's remarkable life at Houston National Cemetery (VA). 10410 Veteran's Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77038 on Friday, December 13, 11:15am. The celebration will continue at Houston Hilton North 2nd floor, 12400 Greenspoint Dr., Houston, TX. 77060. Light refreshments will be served.
