Leon Overby of Waller, Texas, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away at the age of 78 years on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, following a brief illness. Leon was born September 11, 1942, in Oak Grove, Louisiana.  He is preceded in death by his father, Enos L. Overby; mother, Louise Overby; and sister, Sheila Rae Fortenberry.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of almost 55 years, Martha Miers Overby; sons, Keith Overby of Tomball, Texas; Kurt Overby and wife, Tanya, of Alvin, Texas; four grandchildren, Carson Overby, Rush Overby, Ellison Overby and Bristol Overby; two brothers, Connie Overby and wife, Debbie of Lake Providence, Louisiana and Johnny Overby and wife, Margaret, of McKinney, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Leon graduated from Lake Providence High School where he was an All-State football player and earned a degree in Business Management from Louisiana Tech University. Leon served seven years in the Louisiana and Texas Army National Guard.

When he and Martha married in 1966, they moved to Houston where he was employed by Tennessee Gas Pipeline in their Hockley underground control center. Deciding Houston was not for them, they moved to Waller, Texas, bought a small house, joined Waller Baptist Church and began raising a family.  In 1969 Leon went to work for The Guaranty Bond State Bank of Waller as a loan office and later as Executive Vice President. Over the years he worked for First Bank serving as President of three of their locations, Norwest Bank and Wells Fargo, retiring in 2008.

Leon was a Texas Real Estate Broker for over 30 years.

Leon loved his family with passion and commitment and was always thinking of others.  His heart was generous and unselfish and even while in the ICU he was sharing Jesus with everybody he could. He never met a stranger and had a genuine love for people.

Leon most recently served as a Deacon at Second Baptist Church, Cypress, and as Director of the Lakeshore Bible Study Class, which he loved.

Visitation will be held 9:00 – 11:00 a.m on Friday, August 20, 2021, and the service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Waller Baptist Church under the direction of Canon Funeral Home.  Interment will follow at Canon-Mathis Cemetery.
