Lena McMakin Jaggers of the Pine Island Community, Hempstead, Texas, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at Kruse Memorial Luthern Village in Brenham, Texas at the age of 100 years.
She was born on June 26th, 1915, in Byersville, Texas to Manley and Annie Robbins McMakin. When she was fifteen years old, the family moved to Monaville, Texas, and then to the Hempstead area in 1930 where she lived until moving to the Kruse Village Complex in 2012.
On Christmas Day, 1935, she married J. T. Jaggers also of Hempstead, Texas. J. T. preceded her in death in 2005, just four months before what would have been their 70th wedding anniversary. Her parents and brothers, Cecil, Arthur, Emery, and Arnold along with her beloved son-in-law Vernon Andricks also preceded her in death.
Lena worked for Mrs. Ruby Jones in her small grocery story on HWY 290 and also for Fowler's, Repka's and Winfree's grocery stores in Hempstead. She retired from Killian's Automotive Parts store where she worked as a bookkeeper. She was a strong willed, independent lady who worked hard all of her life on the farm and often said, "I did everything on a farm that a mule did except pull a plow".
Lena is survived by two daughters, Nancy Bickley and husband Joe of Montgomery, Texas, and Mildred Andricks of Hempstead, Texas. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Christy Eason and her husband Scott of Brenham, Texas, Kathryn Bickley of Conroe, Texas and Karen Davis and husband Mike also of Conroe, Texas. Seven great grandchildren who all loved to visit Grannie Jaggers and her pets also survive her; Tanner Hansen, Madison Schiel, Keagan Eason and Karson, Brayan, Hudson and Melayna Davis. She is also survived by sister-in-laws, Janice Brumlow, Ruby Brumlow, and Gladys Jaggers, two brother-in-laws, Clyde Jaggers and wife Joyce, and Lee Jaggers and wife Joyce and many nieces and nephews.
Lena was a member of Pine Island Baptist Church which was next door to her home. She served there for many years in the kitchen preparing meals, serving food and also took credit for "training" all the young pastors who served there.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 8th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Canon Funeral Home, Waller, Texas, with services being held on Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., also at Canon Funeral Home, Waller, Texas.
Pall bearers will be: Scott Eason, Mike Davis, Tanner Hansen, Bill Eplen, Gary Hohlt, and Oscar Sanchez. Honorary pall bearers are the men of Pine Island Baptist Church.
