Joyce Nell
Smith
Jun 2, 1930 — Aug 1, 2020
Joyce Nell Smith, age 90, of Waller, TX passed away August 1, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband, James B. Smith; parents, Edwin Huck Sr. and Addie Flukinger and brother E.H. (Bud) Flukinger Jr. Joyce was born June 2, 1930 in Houston, Texas. When she was nine years old, she and her family moved to Waller, TX where she grew up surrounded by her daddy's fields of corn, peanuts, watermelons, hay and cattle. Joyce ventured to Houston after graduating from high school to study nursing at the prestigious Hermann Hospital. Joyce was a rare soul who was incredibly book smart but also had more common sense than most. She proudly graduated as a nurse in 1950. She returned to her hometown of Waller where she worked for many years in the Waller County Hospital and with Dr. Bolton in his busy hometown clinic. On October 19, 1951 she married James B. Smith. They adopted two children, Donna Sue and Timothy Glen. Joyce's greatest delight was raising her children and opening her door to all the children in the community including numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She was often referred to as the "favorite aunt". She was everyone's biggest cheerleader and infinitely proud of her children and grandchildren. Joyce's infectious laugh and joyful spirit made her a joyous person for her family and her large community of friends. Joyce was a wonderful cook who had an open door policy. She always had a pot of coffee brewing and an extra plate of food for anyone who stopped by. She loved sitting around the kitchen table listening to stories and "solving the world's problems". She often hosted 40 or more people on Thanksgiving and never had a bad word to say of anyone. The yearly family vacation to Surfside was a favorite time for Joyce. She had an immense love for the ocean and reveled in hunting for seashells and eating fresh shrimp. Joyce was a devout Christian and dearly loved her church family. She spent many hours planning and teaching bible classes and endless hours volunteering in the community. In 1979 she went back to work as a school nurse where she worked for many years for the Waller School District. Joyce had an incredible green thumb, and once grew a pineapple from a pineapple she brought back from Hawaii. Her empathic heart, giving nature and selfless acts will be remembered by many. Her love for people will carry on through her children, grandchildren, and all of those lives she touched. She is survived by two children- daughter, Donna Lawton (Reno, Nevada), son Tim Smith and his wife Bonnie (Waller, TX), six grandchildren-Mitchell Mortenson, Chase Smith, Kyle Lawton, Cassidy Smith, Tommy Warren, Taylor Warren and one great-grandson, Liam Smith. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and friends who lovingly called her Granny. She will forever be deeply missed by her family, her friends and her beloved hummingbirds.
