Sheriff R. Glenn Smith, age 61 of Hempstead, Texas,  passed away on August 1, 2020. He is survived by his wife Deedee, son  Kevin and wife  Jennifer of Victoria,  daughter  Baylee Kate Adams and husband  Bodie  of  Bellville, brother Coy Smith and wife Pat of Clyde, Tx,   sister in law Sissi Galloway and husband Greg of Lakeway,  brother in law Jack Lloyd and wife Madonna of Beaumont, grandchildren Rosalind  and Connor Smith and a host of nieces and nephews.

At 18 years of age Glenn began his criminal justice career that continued for 42 years. During his 42 years he served the citizens in various law enforcement capacities. His career started as a Corrections Officer in death row with the Texas Department of Corrections, then went on to be a Deputy Sheriff with Grimes County, Agent with Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and a Narcotics Investigator with South East Texas Narcotics Task Force under the operation of the Hardin County Sheriff's Office.  From there he became Chief of Police in Kountze, TX. then was asked to take over the Narcotics Task force as Commander.  After the death of his father he returned to Sabine County to oversee his family's insurance Agency Sabine Insurance and worked as a Deputy, later  promoted to Chief Deputy for Sheriff Tom Mattox.  Served as Chief of Police of Hempstead until 2008 when he then became the Sheriff of Waller County.

Glenn was a member of the Waller Baptist Church and President of the Hempstead Lion's Club. He was on the Advisory Committee for San Bernard Electric Co-op, HLSR Safety Committee Captain of Investigators, Gideon's International, Waller County Fair Association,  Waller Area Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of Sheriffs' Association of Texas, National Sheriffs' Association, Western States Sheriffs' Association, Texas Border Sheriffs' Coalition, and Texas Narcotics Officers Association. Glenn was a Life Member of the NRA, TSRA, Sons of the Republic of Texas, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, and the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

Glenn graduated from Sam Houston University with a Bachelor of Science in  Criminal Justice, had Graduate Studies in Juvenile Justice at Prairie View A&M, and also received his Master Peace Officer Certification.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 11 am at Community of Faith Church with Pastor John Brandt officiating. Interment will be Thursday August 6, 2020 2pm, at Hemphill Cemetery in Hemphill, TX.
